Collage strikes me as one of the most difficult art forms. I think about how challenging it is to convey form with the stroke of a paintbrush or pen, and then I consider trying to do it with a ripped piece of paper . . . yikes. When these fauna collage prints by Darrah Gooden of Tiny Fawn landed in my inbox, I had to stop and stare in admiration for a bit. They feel so effortlessly composed, and I love how Darrah manages to convey movement and personality in each animal so economically — just a few artful slivers of colored tissue. I don't know what it's like in your neighborhood, but when I step outside here in Oakland, I sense it right away: Fall is in the air! I'm lucky enough to have a few turning trees on my street, so I don't miss out entirely on the brilliant autumn colors I remember from growing up in NH. Speaking of brilliant autumn colors, I'm thrilled to share this stunning maple leaf rose bouquet DIY from a fellow Kate — clay, fiber and paper artist Kate Hust.

Kate first learned how to make these a few years ago from a retired art teacher in her community, and now they've become an annual tradition when fall rolls around. Her instructor taught her to wrap the leaves really tight, so they looked like rose buds, but Kate has modified the technique a bit to suit her own tastes: She likes to find the really big leaves and make them with large open "petals." She's clearly perfected the craft, and I'm so happy that she's decided to pass the tradition on to us. Thanks for sharing, Kate! — Kate

Kill Math makes math more meaningful

After a certain point in math education, like some time during high school, the relevance of the concepts to the everyday and the real world seem to fade. However, in many ways, math lets you describe real life better than you can with just words. Designer Bret Victor hopes to make the abstract and conceptual to real and concrete with Kill Math.

Kill Math is my umbrella project for techniques that enable people to model and solve meaningful problems of quantity using concrete representations and intuition-guided exploration. In the long term, I hope to develop a widely-usable, insight-generating alternative to symbolic math.

As part of the early project, Victor developed a prototype interface on the iPad to help you understand dynamical systems. It probably sounds boring to you, but the video and explanation will change your mind:

Statistics has the same problem with concepts, and is one of the main reasons why people hate it so much. They learn about curves, hypothesis tests, and distribution tables, and the takeaway is that there are some equations that you plug numbers into. Sad. Of course there are plenty of people working on that, but there's still a ways to go.

The Social Media Brandsphere is a new collaboration between Brian Solis andJESS3. The Brandsphere explores how brand storytelling can cross different communication mediums.

Over on the JESS3 blog, they've posted 10 of the different early versions and concepts of the Brandsphere so you can see some of the behind-the-scenes design process at work.

Social networks and channels present brands with a broad array of media opportunities to engage customers and those who influence them. Each channel offers a unique formula for engagement where brands become stories and people become storytellers. Using a transmedia approach, the brand story can connect with customers differently across each medium, creating a deeper, more enriching experience. Transmedia storytelling doesn't follow the traditional rules of publishing; it caters to customers where they connect and folds them into the narrative. In any given network, brands can invest in digital assets that span five media landscapes:

1. Paid: Digital advertising, banners, adwords, overlays
2. Owned: Created assets, custom content
3. Earned: Brand-related conversations and user-generated content

4: Promoted: in-stream or social paid promotions vehicles (e.g. Twitter's Promoted products and Facebook's Sponsored Stories)

5. Shared: Open platforms or communities where customers co-create and collaborate with brands. (e.g. Dell's IdeaStorm and Starbuck'sMyStarbucksIdea.)

Any combination of the five media strategies defines a new Brandsphere where or
ganizations can capture attention, steer online experiences, spark conversations and word of mouth can help customers address challenges or create new opportunities. Each media channel connects differently with people and thus requires a dedicated approach integrating tangible and intangible value. Doing so ensures a critical path for social media content: relevance, reach and resonance.

Tree House in Sanctuaire Mont Cathédrale by Pauline Tremblay and Pierre Léveillé

I love this home called the "Tree House" by Pauline Tremblay and Pierre Léveillé. Located in Quebec's Eastern Townships, it's the first house atSanctuaire Mont Cathédrale, a housing project designed to blend into its surroundings by using sustainable materials and technologies.

"The Sanctuaire is the result of more than ten years of reflection on one simple question: Do we have to be outside to experience nature?" says project manager Pierre Léveillé. The idea was to create a home in which one could experience nature as closely as possible. Inspired by a tree, the house's first floor is covered in wood to represent a tree trunk. I love the second floor, which is covered in copper tiles, or "leaves," which will, over time, develop a green patina just like its surrounding vegetation.

The home is also warm and natural inside, but also modern. The harmonious use of wood, marble, quartz, steel, glass, and porcelain as well as the wood beams bring the outside in. I'd totally live here.

The design and production details are absolutely gorgeous and I can't wait to pick up a bottle for myself. Six curved concrete diving boards stick out like tongues across one pool at the end of the main hall, beneath an undulating wave-like roof.

The competition pool is also located in this hall, which will seat 17,500 spectators during the games.

In this video, we get a sneak-peak tour of life with Felice Cohen in a place where storage is sacrosanct … but bonking a head on the ceiling when waking is a real risk, and going to the bathroom requires wedging oneself onto the seat sideways.

Building up is critical and as she points out (only half joking) most New Yorkers use the stove as a supplementary closet anyway – conventional cooking is out of the question, so a hot pot and cold eats are standard fare. Still, there is some separation of activities – a work chair versus a desk chair, for instance.

A little refrigerator has to be sufficient, fewer clothes can be owned and book choices become precious decisions when both professional and personal space are in limited supply. This is just a work in progress, though, and a learning process – perhaps the basis for some future writings as well.

While it is neat and creative, this is more than just another shock-and-awe object – it would work in multiple materials with the same shape and functionality, stores well, uses standard fasteners and is constructed in a durable fashion to boot.

DIY Sod Sofas: Recline in Real Green-Grass Lawn Loungers

On a hot summer day, there is nothing like taking off your shoes or using sandals to expose your toes for a walk through a low garden or lawn. Taking it (literally) to the next level, sod-upholstered couches are a great way to cool down with a book in the backyard.

In Black Rock City, Nevada, this author even saw (and sat in) a grass couch set up in the middle of the desert – perhaps not the most sustainable design solution, but it sure was comfortable (and on very hot and dry days: even better when freshly watered).

Note: for most arid climates, it might be a bit more eco-friendly to just use something of the astroturf variety (though it sounds a little scratchy, to be honest). Still, it saves that pesky problem of trying to mow in difficult corners or up vertical green surfaces.

Best of all, though, anyone can build a sod sofa for themselves right at home – and perhaps an ottoman, coffee or side table to go with it. Build a pair of benches and you could make the perfect above-but-on-the-ground picnic spot.

Rocking Horse Rocker

The 'Rocker' rocking horse designed by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien is a great addition to the new collection of children's furniture from Richard Lampert.

This plastic hourglass-shaped body rests simply on two wooden runners, providing hours of rocking fun, and, at the same time, producing a wonderful design object.

Many things of interest to young children are not figurative but simply everyday objects that are not intended for play! Children find their own imaginative purpose for any object already in the home. This observation prompted Doshi Levien to create a 'Rocker' that is like a found object, an improvised ride.

Doshi Levien is a London based design office, established in 2000.

Gino Sarfatti "n°1063"

"...For many specialists, Gino Sarfatti, creator of hundreds of models, is 20th century's greatest lighting designer. "I have never been interested in form,"* he confesses, defining himself as an artisan. Everything starts with the bulb for this great chrome stand enthusiast who invented a lamp kit to change as you wish into nine different types of lighting, wall light, reflector, etc.

Gino Sarfatti "Moon"

Gino Sarfatti occupies a core place in this exhibition. The most spectacular piece and the most important: the large n°2068 ceiling light designed in 1952. With its thirty lights, it conjures up a modern castle, a church candelabra or the crown of candles worn by young girls in the procession during the Festival of Light in Nordic countries. Everything is sober, meticulous, but also ethereal with Sarfatti, who chooses to leave the wire apparent "because you have to be able to look at the reason for the lamp."* Amongst others is the extremely rare wall light n°194 (1950) in brass and lacquered metal, the audacious lamp n°1063 which totally changed the idea of domestic lighting (Compasso d'Oro in 1954, prestigious Italian design award), the table lamp n°604 called Moon (1969), with a scattering of micro-bulbs like lunar craters.

Ettore Sottsass "Asteroid"

For at the era of the conquest of space, tomorrow's light comes from outer space, following the example of the Asteroide (1968) table lamp, a very 'pop' creation by Ettore Sottsass, leader of the Memphis neo- baroque movement. Made of perspex, it reflects peninsula designers' taste for new materials adaptable to the craziest shapes. The Golden Gate by Nanda Vigo features amongst the exhibition's centrepieces, extensive refined architecture spanning two metres which won its designer, influenced by the silhouette of the eponymous bridge, the New York Prize for Industrial Design in 1971, or Rimorchiatore by Gae Aulenti (1969), an example of which appears in the Centre Pompidou collection. Also featuring are creations by the Italians Angelo Lelli - the Calder of lighting -, Studio A.R.D.I.T.I., Matteo Thun and Joe Colombo (honoured by a retrospective at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 2007).

Gae Aulenti "Rimorchiadore"

Without forgetting, for comparison, works by Français Michel Buffet in the vein of Serge Mouille and the German master Ingo Maurer. Finally to complete this vintage selection the Escargot (snail) lamp, created by Le Corbusier in 1954 for the Cité Radieuse in Marseille, produced for the first time in 2011 by Cassina with a limited edition of 150 numbered pieces. Neutra and Eames house numbers from Heath Ceramics

Heath Ceramics and House Industries are launching Heath house numbers, three-dimensional clay tiles celebrating the legendary Neutra and Eames fonts.

The Heath artisans are uniquely qualified to create a three-dimensional ceramic representation of House Industries' two-dimensional typographic world. Each clay tile is glazed in a matte finish with a raised, unglazed number. As with all Heath tiles, Heath house numbers are pressed, hand-glazed, trimmed, and kiln-fired. They fuse simple, crisp lines, geometric forms and rich glazes in bold and classic colors. The two companies designed the tiles to be modular and easily integrated within a Heath tile installation, as well as to be displayed on their own with the use of a beautiful, modern track system—available in either salvaged teak or stainless steel.

"Bringing the Neutra and Eames-inspired fonts to life in clay form is so exciting to us," says Heath Ceramics Creative Director Catherine Bailey. "Forming these beautiful and refined type-shapes out of an imprecise material, like clay, creates a fantastic contrast. The finished piece becomes as interesting as what's likely to be housed inside the homes where the numbers preside."

Richard J. Neutra was a rare personality whose character combined an uncommon aesthetic ability with a profound sense of civic responsibility. His physio-psychic architecture linked living spaces to their surrounding landscapes, physically and intellectually enriching the entire being. Impressed with Neutra's design sensibilities, House Industries consulted with his son and partner, Dion, to produce Neutraface—an extensive font family based on the lettering that adorned many Neutra buildings. Since first releasing Neutraface in 2001, House Industries has continued to expand the family of typefaces with alternative, condensed and slab-serif styles.

Charles and Ray Eames are among the most important American designers of this century. House Industries worked closely with the Eames family for over ten years to gain access to some of the more obscure archive materials, to seek approval for the designs and to get a feel for what Charles and Ray would have wanted in a font family that bears their name. The Eames Century Roman family has eight different weights, from a distinctively delicate thin to a bombastic extra black. Corresponding italics are on double duty with their subtle nod to Ray Eames' handwriting style while also providing an accompaniment to the Roman styles. Keeping with the Eames philosophy of balancing form and function, House also developed a special stencil version of the heaviest weight of the text family.

The Neutra numbers (3x6 inches) are offered in museum black and mid-century white, while the more playful Eames numbers (4x4 inches) are available in bright yellow, paprika, and museum black.

'Container' sideboard by Alain Gilles for Casamania

'Container' is a modular sideboard system by Belgian designer Alain Gilles for Italian manufacturer Casamania.
As if a regular sideboard had been split into different elements, different "containers". It is really a research on deconstruction and reconstruction. As if a 'standard' sideboard with its different storage functionalities had been split into various elements just to be reconstructed in a different, uneven manner.

A research on the architecture of a piece in order to bring forward its construction logic. In a way, a 'landing dock', the base, and a few "containers" that can be set one on top of the other... hens its name.

The work on the structure is further highlighted by the association of different materials and finishes applied to each structural element.

By playing with different types of finishes and settings several furniture pieces with their own personalities and functions can easily be created form the same original elements. Thus, it will either be seen as more a sideboard, dresser, media storage cabinet or television stand and find its way into different rooms of the house

Pioneers of American Industrial Design Stamps

The Pioneers of American Industrial Design stamp pane honors 12 of the nation's most important and influential industrial designers.

Encompassing everything from furniture and electric kitchen appliances to corporate office buildings and passenger trains, the work of these designers helped shape the look of everyday life in the 20th century.

Industrial design emerged as a profession in the U.S. in the 1920s but really took hold during the Depression. Faced with decreasing sales, manufacturers turned to industrial designers to give their products a modern look that would appeal to consumers. Characterized by horizontal lines and rounded, wind-resistant shapes, the new, streamlined looks differed completely from the decorative extravagance of the 1920s. They evoked a sense of speed and efficiency and projected the image of progress and affluence the public desired.

Consumer interest in modern design continued to increase after World War II, when machines allowed corporations to mass produce vacuums, hair dryers, toasters and other consumer goods at low cost. Industrial designers helped lower costs further by exploiting inexpensive new materials like plastic, vinyl, chrome, aluminum and plywood, which responded well to advances in manufacturing such as the use of molds and stamping. Affordable prices and growing prosperity nationwide helped drive popular demand.

Even as streamlining gave way to new looks in the 1960s, the groundbreaking work of industrial designers continued to transform the look of homes and offices across the country. Today, industrial design remains an integral component of American manufacturing and business, as well as daily life.

In all, more than 60 designers will present their vision of the domestic world, from the most arty-ficial of Frederique Morel's scenic incarnations, to the realism of free art projects, such as Pauline Deltour's office accessories, the chinese designer Chenzu Sun's seating system, lights by Jean Couvreur, Pool discovered at the Nouvelle Vague exhibition in Milan, or the surprising geometric Bistable shelves by Charles Kalpakian, who plays around with our blurred vision.

eliumstudio table 'Do it Yourself'
Initially conceived for L'Express magazine at the request of Marion Vignal, this series of simple tables will finally meet its public after having been put on hold. A table-top, lampshade support and colored cord to unify the whole, it can all be put together yourself! Eliumstudio, too often labelled as "designers of industrial products", demonstrates here a talent and sensitivity towards furniture with elegance and humour.

Glitch Fiction
A collective founded at the Royal College of Art, Glitch Fiction proposes scenery objects for an activist design. It is a border between fiction and reality as enjoyable as it is experimental, which enables the designers to explore fields such as genetic manipulation, biopolitics and the artificiality of nature. During Paris Design Week, Glitch will exhibit all their new projects by Austin Houldsworth, David Benque, Nicolas Myers, Facet, Thomas Thwaites, Nitipak Samsen, The Workers, Nelly Ben Hayoun et Good Wives and Warriors.

Pauline Deltour office accessories in aluminium
A young designer who went through the studios of Konstantin Grcic, Pauline Deltour is currently working with extruded aluminium to create a range of office accessories. Extrusion is the thermo-mechanical fabrication process through which a compressed material is forced through a mold of the piece being created. One can continuously produce a product of uniform shape, with no limitation of length or signs of deformity. She uses this process to obtain different elements from one form. Once the shape is extruded, it is cut on specific angles producing objects with very distinct silhouettes and configurations.

Home Art is a phenomenon that arose in the second half of the 20th century in communist Czechoslovakia. Home Art was made by people with no art education and with ambition not reaching beyond the intent of creating a piece of art simply for their and their family's joy. These artifacts decorated the interiors of Communist era housing projects, countryside cottages, offices and workrooms, pubs and military dormitories. Artistry, craftsmanship, and a peculiar design inspiration is much in evidence as one tours this collection which serves as a kind of document of the personal and widely felt response to the social and economic constraints of that era.

Home Art, especially at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s, complemented the "atomic style", for which the name "Brussels style" is used in Czechoslovakia after the 1958 Brussels World's Fair, where Czech designs won 27 gold medals.

While bursts of Czech Home Art activity can be seen in the mid 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, the 1960s was the time when it reached its peak. By the fall of the communist regime in 1989, this modern folklore has more or less disappeared.

1959 Harley Panhead custom

Matt Whitlock runs Wrecked Metals, a hotrod and chopper shop in Boise, Idaho. And when he's not building slammed Fords and Chevys, he's riding this super-clean 1959 Harley. His Panhead has an effortless beauty about it, but the build was a mission for Matt. He'd had his eye on the bike for a long time, and finally scraped together enough money to buy it. After an incident-prone four years of riding it, he sent the motor off for a rebuild—and the shop burnt down. The Panhead engine survived the fire, but it took Matt a year to get it back. It's now been extended to 93 ci, and is hooked up to a 4-speed transmission. The bike has a rigid frame, an inline Springer front end and a suicide shift. 'I tried to hand-fabricate as much stuff as I could,' says Matt. 'I've owned the bike for 10 years.' Matt made the shotgun pipes, bars, forward controls and fender himself, giving the Harley a timeless, classic look. It might be half a century old, but this big twin is in the prime of its life. This 7,200 square-foot lot was an abandoned brown-field site, vacant since 1992. The architect/owner used the space to build a private, urban residence for his family with an on-site architecture studio. The residence is a stucco box resting on and supported by Corten steel wall planes, providing both privacy and noise attenuation. The main living area is surrounded by a reflecting pool on one side and a glass floor on the other. Below grade, where the office and recreation facilities reside, the glass floor/ceiling liberates the space and allows ample natural light. The house is open and flowing extending the livable space into the private garden and reflecting pool. Boundaries are dissolved and extended through sliding panels and lightness, transparency, and expansive views.

a foundation dedicated to the research, restoration, and conservation of works of art and design produced in plastic.

the entire 'botanica' collection, curated by marco petroni

at one time, plastics were heralded as the exciting 'material of the future', but have since come to be commonly regarded

as representative of a mass consumerist, ecologically unsustainable period of industrial production. for the project,

curated by marco petroni, formafantasma investigated natural, plant and animal-based polymers, including rosin,

dammar (a varnish tapped from trees), copal (a sub-fossil state of amber), natural rubber, shellac (extracted from insect excrement),

and the 19th-century plastic-like bois durci (composed of sawdust and egg or blood).

in the pieces they produce, the natural textures and colours of the resins create an effect not completely unlike 20th-century bakelite products,

but the overall aesthetic of the works themselves instead attends simultaneously to the historical periods before and after the oil era,

offering archaic-like forms and assemblages curated with a contemporary perspective.

in 'botanica', the designers note, modern plastics are indeed used amidst the natural polymers, but 'as precious details'

rather than the foundation of the pieces, 'in an attempt to develop a new post-industrial aesthetic.'

There are three 'holy' axioms of green technology that all innovative designs should look forth to incorporate - efficiency, low environmental effect and cost potency. While the first two criteria are met by most of the designs, there is much that is to be desired on the last part, which is cost. Well, the Float, a solar powered catamaran designed by Jeffrey Greger and Timo Bücker, is one such conscientious conception that seems to address this problem quite vehemently and that too in a zero emission mode.

Basically, this unique catamaran is composed of many individual parts like solar panels, sun shade, seating mesh, etc. Most of them are removable, can be fitted inside a container formed by both of the foldable polypro pontoons and zipped together! This contraption can then be transported quite easily on a car top.

The solar cells are imbued into the acrylic panels that are accommodated onto the roof supports. They are connected to 60 lithium-ion batteries that efficiently power the boat. The hull has a framework of sturdy steel rods inside the yellow platform for structural strength. An insulated pouch is stapled along side for carrying of food and drinks.

Coming onto the controls, this boat includes an advanced yet convenient system of control panel. The panel can indicate the battery status, and also features speed and steering controls, music player and even touch screen e-ink display. Adding to that, the steering is also made user friendly.

Marketed towards the young age group, this heartfelt design does comes across as something of convenience, being effective and low cost. And most importantly, it epitomizes the very evolution of our green technology in a pretty simple and adroit manner.

Non mi interessa niente di quel che viene dopo labisso originario o al di sotto delle distanze siderali.

Il progetto "NORD – Le distanze siderali" è la prima tappa di due mostre che avranno come punto di partenza le analogie tra gli antichi testi norreni giunti fino a noi e le ultime congetture sullorigine dell' Universo.

Nella mitologia nordica il Ginnungagap è l'orrida voragine che esisteva prima della stessa creazione, quindi prima del concetto stesso di spazio e tempo, dal quale si sono originati i primi giganti che hanno dato vita all'universo stesso in cui viviamo. I buchi neri sembrano invece contenere il segreto dellorigine dellUniverso nel loro nucleo talmente massivo ma di infinitesima dimensione da rendere impossibile lesistenza di spazio e tempo come normalmente li percepiamo.

Altra fonte di ispirazione del progetto sono quindi le opere di Isaac Asimov in cui mito, letteratura e ricerca scientifica si completano a vicenda nella dilatazione fantastica di spazio e tempo nellUniverso conosciuto.

Questa mostra in particolare sarà dedicata alle distanze siderali che ci separano dal cielo stellato; sarà composta da una serie di installazioni pensate appositamente per gli spazi della galleria Galica e comprenderanno anche due performance (una di queste sonora) che continueranno per tutta la durata dell'inaugurazione. Come in molte altre opere di Marco Di Giovanni, oltre al metallo, la carta e la gommapiuma, saranno utilizzati dispositivi ottici che permetteranno un'interazione da parte del pubblico. Opere che sembrano uscite dal mondo steampunk e che possono ricordare i lavori di autori visionari e indipendenti dalle mode dell'arte quale ad esempio Panamarenko.

Un tentativo di andare oltre i concetti stessi di storia e di contemporaneo. Una serie di lavori che non seguono l'ossessione per il contesto propria della maggior parte delle opere d'arte create in questi ultimi anni, riallacciandosi con quello che da sempre è l'obiettivo e la natura stessa dell'arte. Essere linguaggio universale capace di superare le differenze e le contingenze spaziali, geografiche e temporali.

Vi è una frase nel libro intitolato "Universo senza fine" di Paul J. Steinhardt e Neil Turok che recita:

"Un modello alternativo richiede necessariamente caratteristiche completamente innovative, ma queste devono essere ben argomentate, scientificamente sensate e matematicamente coerenti. Un nuovo modello che si proponga di comprendere lintera storia dellUniverso probabilmente non nasce compiutamente sviluppato in tutte le sue parti. Verosimilmente da principio dovrebbe presentarsi come unintelaiatura, non definitiva, di idee concrete interconnesse con una buona dose di speculazioni ardite".

Il giardino della memoria

Anne e Patrick Poirier sono ciò che rimane del loro figlio Alain-Guillaume. Al giovane scomparso hanno dedicato questo lavoro, che intitolano "Il giardino della memoria". Si tratta di un progetto per un'area cimiteriale aperta a cittadini italiani e stranieri di tutte le credenze religiose.

I Poirier sono due artisti francesi (ex-borsisti a Villa Medici di Roma) che hanno sempre lavorato sul tema della memoria: un luogo psicologico carico di seduzioni. Li abbiamo visti nella benemerita galleria milanese di Massimo Valsecchi, tappa sofisticata di un itinerario quanto mai discreto, ma che pure hanno compiuto sulla scena delle più prestigiose gallerie e musei dell'Occidente.

Per la loro meditatio in creaturis e meditatio in moribus, condotte in maniera certosina e un po' defilata nonostante la notorietà, hanno prediletto, lungo l'arco di quattro decenni circa, tutte le tracce di un passato arcaico. Hanno maneggiato lapidi, erme, calchi, rovine, erbari, lingue morte, reperti archeologici, pur di ridestare la passione, illuministica direi, sulla memoria mundi, in un equilibrio formale prodigioso di reticenze e di colpi di scena. Uccelli migratori, schegge terrestri, i Poirier sono se stessi e il proprio doppio, stanno nelle località di cui ci narrano, ma, nel loro stare, appartengono già a un altrove.

Il giardino delle delizie è un ricordo e, insieme, una promessa. Ricordate Rudolf Borchardt, l'eccentrico letterato di lingua tedesca, quando scrive "Sogno e ricordo, desiderio e speranza, parabole e simboli dell'uomo si presentano come giardini. L'uomo continua a creare giardini per realizzare la sua inappagata brama di un mondo negativo. Un giardino è una cosa da cui dobbiamo essere stati cacciati; altrimenti, come avremmo potuto abbandonarlo?"

Il giardino è portatore di sacralità; è qualcosa di concreto, ma anche una macchina allegorica. Esso è molte cose: simboli, stemmi, emblemi: è Arcadia, Eden, Pan, Demetra, profezia e oracolo, araldica e magia, cerimonia e incanto. Il giardino, protetto da mura o da steccati, è lo spazio dedito all'otium (il riposo meditativo) e, quindi, alla cultura dell'anima.

Nella settecentesca Palazzina Pirola della città di Gorgonzola è stata aperta per due mesi (e chiusa nello scorso dicembre) la mostra del progetto per il cimitero: disegni, acquarelli, plastici. I Poirier sono stati assistiti dagli architetti David Leclerc e Léonard Boeldieu. Nel bel catalogo (Skira), sottotitolato Progetto per una necropoli contemporanea, si leggono – rarità assoluta, oggi – bei testi di Luca Molinari, dello stesso sindaco di Gorgonzola, Walter Baldi, e di Anne e Patrick Poirier.

Una foglia di quercia ha fornito lo spunto per la planimetria del campo sacro, raccontano gli autori. "Il profilo lobato della foglia sarebbe stato il muro di cinta e le venature i percorsi pedonali." La foglia di quercia è parte di un albero già adorato nella mitologia pagana. Si sarebbe mai potuto tentare un esperimento del genere se non ci fosse stato a fare da ideatore e mediatore il mai abbastanza lodato Massimo Valsecchi?

SOS Gianni Avon !

Constatando una volta di più che le grida di allarme per il destino di testimonianze significative dell'architettura del XX secolo sono così frequenti da poter quasi costituire una rubrica quotidiana, pubblichiamo questa segnalazione di Ferruccio Luppi, storico dell'architettura, coautore di due monografie sull'opera di Gianni Avon*, e ricercatore presso la Fondazione Portaluppi di Milano. Nella cittadina balneare di Grado (Gorizia), la regione Friuli-Venezia Giulia ha approvato un financial project per l'ampliamento del polo termale da affidare in concessione a un operatore privato. Il progetto prevede in sostanza la realizzazione di un grande albergo di lusso con parcheggio sotterraneo. Ciò comporta: a. la demolizione del complesso delle Terme Marine realizzato da Gianni Avon fra il 1970 e il 1974; b. il "ridimensionamento" – termine quantomeno singolare ma indicativo delle manomissioni che dovrebbe subire – del Palazzo dei Congressi di Marco Zanuso e Gianni Avon (1973-1980).

Assieme allo Zipser di Marcello D'Olivo, questi due edifici sono le sole architetture di Grado a essere state inserite nelle guide d'architettura del Novecento. All'interno delle Terme, disposto su tre livelli, si trova poi un pavimento musivo di Giuseppe Zigaina di ben 250 metri quadrati, di difficile, se non impossibile, rimozione.

Per segnalare e contrastare questa operazione i figli di Gianni Avon – Elena e Giulio – hanno raccolto in due documenti, che qui pubblichiamo, una serie di materiali critici relativi alle due opere, le Terme Marine e il Palazzo dei Congressi. Nel frattempo, sulla questione ha preso posizione anche la Federazione Regionale degli Ordini degli Architetti del Friuli Venezia Giulia, che ha rivolto formalmente alla Direzione Regionale per i Beni Culturali e Paesaggistici una richiesta di tutela dei due edifici.

Gianni Avon (1922-2006). Laureato allo IUAV di Venezia nel 1947, è attivo soprattutto in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Tra le sue realizzazioni, a Udine ricordiamo l'edificio residenziale in viale della Vittoria (1961-1964, premiato con la targa regionale In/Arch 1964), il Palazzo delle Manifestazioni (1964-1970), la sede della Banca Cattolica del Veneto (1965-1972), l'Università degli Studi (1968-1982), il padiglione materno-infantile per l'Ospedale Civile (1975-1984). A Lignano Pineta è autore del Grand Hotel Pineta Palace (1956-1958), della Casa Albergo (1957-1958), della torre Ariston (1960-1963, con Silvano Zorzi). A Grado progetta le Nuove Terme (1970-1974) e il Palazzo dei Congressi (1973-1980, con Marco Zanuso). Dal 1964 partecipa con Francesco Tentori alla ricostruzione di Longarone e assieme a Marco Zanuso progettano il nuovo cimitero di Muda Maè (1966-1972). Nel 1977 è – con Giancarlo De Carlo, Fausto Colombo, Umberto Riva, Maria Luisa Anversa, Ludovico Magistretti, Marco Zanuso – uno dei professionisti chiamati dall'A.I.D. (Agency for International Development) per la ricostruzione delle scuole nel Friuli terremotato. Dal 1983 è associato ai figli Elena e Giulio nello studio "Avon associati", in collaborazione realizzano la chiesa di Lusevera (1988-90), due padiglioni ospedalieri a Udine (1996-2001) e numerosi allestimenti museografici.

Yossi Milo Gallery is announcing an exhibition of photographs by Ezra Stoller (American, 1915-2004).

A pioneer in the field of architectural photography, Ezra Stoller was commissioned by architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Paul Rudolph, Eero Saarinen, I.M. Pei, Marcel Breuer and Richard Meier, because of his unique ability to capture the building according to the architect's vision and to lock it into the architectural canon. His photographs convey a three-dimensional experience of architectural space through a two-dimensional medium, with careful attention to vantage point and lighting conditions, as well as to line, color, form and texture.

Ezra Stoller was born in Chicago in 1915 and graduated from New York University in 1938. He worked briefly with the photographer Paul Strand in the Office for Emergency Management before being drafted in 1942 into the U.S. Army, where he taught photography at the Army Signal Corps Photo Center in Long Island City. During his long career, he also photographed factories and technical facilities as well as residential projects. In 1961, he became the first photographer to be awarded the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal. His photographs have been exhibited internationally and belong to numerous museum collections.

Ezra Stoller's gelatin silver prints include images of architectural interiors and iconic landmarks. Based on his background in architecture and industrial design, Stoller used a large-format camera to photograph monumental 20th century buildings, including the Guggenheim Museum, the TWA terminal at Idlewild Airport (now John F. Kennedy International Airport), the Seagram Building, the Salk Institute, Yale Art and Architecture Building and Fallingwater. In addition to well-known photographs of these locations, the exhibition will include lesser-known photographs of small homes and guest houses which provide a fresh look at the masterful eye that established Stoller as the preeminent photographer of modern architecture.

Rolling buildings on rails

Swedish architecture office Jagnefalt Milton has been awarded the third prize in the Norwegian master plan competition for the city of Åndalsnes. Their proposal was to have buildings rolling through the city on rails.

The jury awarded the Swedish office for a proposal where existing and new rail roads would provide the base for new building that could be rolled back and forth depending on seasons and situations. Amongst other they proposed a rolling hotel, a rolling public bath and a rolling concert hall.

– We are really happy that the jury took our proposal serious, its not only a good proposal which we are very proud of, it's also fully doable, says Carl Jägnefält one of the two founders of Jägnefält Milton.

The jury was impressed by the Swedes proposals that did not propose new city blocks, public squares, boardwalks etcetera, but instead focused entirely on the existing rail road network and created something unexpected from it. They were also moved by the presentation material which they thought had a surreal mood with a magic and Tarkovsky-esk atmosphere that contrasted well with the sober and technical plans and axonometric drawings.

Jagnefält Milton is an architecture office in Stockholm, Sweden. The office was founded in 2009 by Konrad Milton and Carl Jägnefält.

Giraffe, a portable spatial divider

Kawamura-Ganjavian presents 'Giraffe' a portable spatial divider.

Contemporary office spaces are based on the flexible open plan principle. However, this lay out jeopardizes individual space and dilutes group dynamics. It creates a visual enclosure for those who are sitting behind it but does not interfere in the general openness of a room.

It is also a pin board and a hub for wired connections.

Kawamura-Ganjavian is a young architecture and design studio established in 2000 by Key Portilla-Kawamura and Ali Ganjavian. After meeting in London, where both were studying, they have worked in several countries: India, USA, Japan, Great Britain and Switzerland. In 2006 they set up their present base in Madrid.

Lady Led by Omri Barzeev

Israeli designer Omri Barzeev created 'Lady Led', a desk lamp which uses three strong but small led lights.

The two legs of the lamp are made of oak wood : they can move up or down the body of the lamp, in order to adapt the lighting angle.

The Leds are inserted in a heat shrinking plastic tube, a feature that allows to hold the led lights without any screws.

Polish star decoration

Dodoplan, a design studio from Poland, has created holiday decorations. They were executed for the Stary Browar Art and Business Centre, an institution which follows the principle of 50 50, where 50% is designated for art, while the other 50% is determined by the commercial aspect.

The project was spurred by the annual witnessing of masses of containers full of plastic Christmas trees and cheap ornaments flooding the worldwide market. Opposing themselves to the global unification of holiday symbols and rituals, the designers reached to the roots and created ornaments inspired by traditional handicrafts, combining them with fresh, contemporary design.

The direct inspiration was "Pajaki" (Spiders) – a Christmas ornament which used to be hung under the ceilings of traditional Polish homes. It was made from locally sourced materials, such as straw, tissue and yarn.

Dodoplan created star shaped modules, which then form expanding, concentric structures, a reference to the original "Spider's" shape.

550 elements were hand-crafted by Polish folk artists, a key aspect of the project. Furthermore, a workshop was held, giving designers and artists an opportunity to teach Poznan residents how to make traditional holiday decorations, alongside an exhibition of the rich history of crafted spiders that inspired the Project (exhibition and project running till 15th January).

Rugs at Maison&Objet

From January 21st-25th Nani Marquina and Nodus will present their new carpets at Maison&Objet Paris.

'Losanges' is the new collection designed by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for Nani Marquina.

"We have always been captivated by the traditional Persian rug, especially by the very old kilim savoir-faire which we see as a delicate mix of rusticity and fineness. We have been lucky to see this project carried through by the craftsmen of Northern Pakistan who managed to skillfully combine thirteen colors through the geometrical rhombus shape. As well as being crafted by hand, the Afghan wool is also spun by hand, which allows for some unique color tones to be highlighted. This subtly random technique makes each lozenge slightly different and each rug, a unique piece." Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

The Italian rug manufactory Nodus presents the palette rug of Lachaert & d'Hanis.

Inspired by the beauty of the Italian fresco they filled their palette with soft, almost transparent colours. The concept is that if someone is interested they can order a palette rug filled with their very own emotional colours wich Nodus will translate in 266 different colours of wool. (300 x 200 cm).

'Roots' by Matali Crasset for Nodus is hand knotted in Nepal. The rug is waved at the beginning at one level and then carved at 4 different heights. Its border has an irregular shape: out of the round edge protrude the ends of the roots to which hand twisted cotton fringes are attached.

The diameter is 220cm. Limited edition in 20 pieces + 1 prototype all signed by Matali Crasset.

Plytube stool

Korean designer Seongyong Lee presented his Plytube stool at imm Cologne.

Plytube is a new way of tubing wood using the same principal of making paper tube but with a process to harden the wooden tube. Plytube is very light (the weight of the stool is 820g) but strong and long lasting.

It is acceptable with all kinds of tooling and finishing for wood. The diameter, thickness, colour, type of wood and even the section of the shape can be customized.

American Streamlined Design Exhibition

Philbrook Museum of Art is opening a new exhibition 'American Streamlined Design: The World of Tomorrow' which focuses on a design era that emerged during the 1930s and 1940s, characterized by curving forms, and smooth, clean silhouettes.

The style, which suggested speed and glamour, entered American design in the post-Depression years. It was widely applied in new forms of architecture, interior decoration and everyday household goods for the home and office.

This was the era when President Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke of the promise of the New Deal. In the depth of the Depression, glossy streamlined products were identified with progress and economic recovery. This scientific-looking, progressive style suggested the hope of the future. "The World of Tomorrow" was the name fittingly given to the 1939 New York World's Fair, a fair that emphasized visions of a sophisticated, scientific world to come.

Over 185 objects in diverse new materials, from Bakelite to stainless steel, are organized thematically around the spheres of American life in the 1930s-50s: the office and workroom, the living room, kitchen, and bath, recreation and transportation. A final section, Streamlining Now, looks at how streamlining still affects design today.
