Schemata: Flat Table

table

Japanese architecture firm Schemata has produced a series of work called Flat Tables.  Using epoxy, the designers have transformed damaged and unconventional surfaces such as school desks (left) and styrofoam (right) into new, smooth surfaces. A lovely way to give discarded items new life.

The Square House in Menorca by MODO Architecture & Design

The Square House in Menorca by MODO Architecture & Design

The Square House was designed by MODO Architecture & Design, Located in Menorca, Spain. This small project (180 sqm) is located near the seaside, in an urbanization on the northface of the port of Mahon, in Menorca. As the site is situated between two houses, the aim of the project was to create an introverted house regarding to the neighbours, and outgoing to the main views to the seaside. It appears as a compact geometry, in contrast to the unlucky catalog of formal solutions of the surrounding neighbours. The program is divided in two floors regarding to the existing strong slope of the site. The main entrance and sleeping area are on the first floor, while the living room and the kitchen are situated on the ground level. The kitchen is conceived to cook looking at the sea, this idea is reinforced by the use of the same floor natural stone in the interior and exterior areas.

Came across these beautiful images of string gardens made by Fedor in Amsterdam.  Information beyond that is a bit of a mystery, but they have many lovely pictures on their site.

Piurra

On a recent trip to Porto, Portugal I met Rui Viana, designer for Piurra furniture.  Piurra just launched several new sideboards including Antoinette and Louis, above.  A nice feature is the removable textile covering which is available on all pieces.  The covers come in standard colors or in limited edition patterns, inspired by traditional Portugeuse motifs (above left).

Daniel Rozin

Artist Daniel Rozin created 'Trash Mirror' from 500 pieces of rubbish he found on the streets of New York.  Through the miracle and magic of science, he configured each scrap to tilt down when someone passes in front of it, casting a shadow in the trash.  You can see a man with a cowboy hat on the left and a person with their arm up on the right. If that all sounds a little confusing check out a youtube video here.
