Central America looks towards volcanoes for renewable energy

Eco Factor: Plan to generate geothermal energy from active volcanoes.

With a rise in energy demands, Central America has turned its face towards active volcanoes for renewable energy, which will reduce its dependence on oil imports and also help reduce the area's carbon footprint. Guatemala, which is Central America's biggest country, now aims to produce over 60 percent of its energy from geothermal and hydroelectric power by 2022.

The government is offering tax breaks of equipment required to set up geothermal plants and electricity regulators are requiring distributors buy greater proportions of this clean energy. Guatemala already has two geothermal power plants and these tax breaks will help providers opt for more.
