nic stubbenhagen, a product design student from germany, has sent us images of 'oktoberfest ozapft is!',
a solid oak wood bar stool made with cut out ornamental details. despite the baroque-esque appearances,
the product required high-tech machinery to construct. the one-year long project aims to be a high tech
object that is contrary to the 'science-fiction' aesthetics we have come to associate them with.
made in collaboration with sven voelker and volker albus of flow europe, the ornament that runs through
the body of the stool seat was carved out with a water jet cutting machine. the water is enriched with
a mixture of quartz sand, which accelerates to the speed of sound. due to the intricateness of the cut-out
and the thickness of the material, this is the only method in which such a design could be made.
