Eco Factor: Waste recycling facility converts food and waste into low carbon electricity.

The Blakeley's Waste Management Ltd., which has been criticized for its controversial relationship with the surrounding community, is now being appreciated for planning a green makeover for its complex at the former Junction Colliery site Bickershaw. The new project aims to achieve zero landfill for the recycling and treatment of waste, generate electricity from renewable sources, providing a centre for education and leisure.

The rubbish-fuelled green power station, which is said to be first for Wigan will utilize advanced thermal treatment technology, called gasification to convert 80,000 tonnes of food and waste that would have otherwise ended up in landfills into "low carbon" electricity. The company will also install 8MW wind turbines to produce enough electricity to light up and supply more than 10,000 homes.

In addition, the 18MW of heat produced may end up being piped up and then sold on to neighboring users. There is hope that the new transfer loading station, materials recycling facility, stables plus new educational wetlands complex and angling lodges will help in fulfilling the dream of obtaining a zero-emission future.
