When it comes to most furniture objects, wear and tear reveals imperfections – cheap material under faux finishes, or boring tones beneath bright surfaces. In this case, each bump, scratch and nick adds character and reveals secret substance beneath an otherwise bland-looking circular coffee table.
Ed Swan (via Core77) created this piece titled Makers Mark with a few levels of meaning, literal and otherwise. While it was on display, users were encouraged to sand, drill and chip away at the table to uncover beautiful abstract patterns of color.
But this could go beyond an artistic exercise or one-time exhibit: what if all the furniture you owned had secrets to share and stories that would only be uncovered over time? The possibilities are as dreamy as the impromptu design patterns that emerged from this particular object.
