isola in danimarca

Sponge Vase

From our archives (originally published Oct 2, 2007), for your gift list consideration…to see more, visit our Gift Guide.

I've long admired this vase… designed by Marcel Wanders, of course.

"this piece is created by dipping a sponge form into fluid porcelain clay. After drying, the piece is fired in an oven where the sponge burns away leaving only the porcelain in its place. In this way porcelain products can be made without a mold."

Plant Label Stakes

Stocking stuffer alert! These poplar stakes would be a perfect little gift for someone with a green thumb.

Plywood Christmas Tree by BUILD LLC

Plywood Christmas Tree by BUILD LLC

BUILD LLC has created this re-usable Christmas tree prototype out of plywood.

Based on the classic Frasier Fir, a popular Christmas tree choice in the Pacific Northwest, this tree is about 5 feet tall. It's two leaves slide together with a slip notch and then when the holidays are over, you can easily detach and flat pack the tree.

For now, this is just a prototype, but let's hope they start manufacturing these in time for next year.

PANTONE’s 2011 Color of the Year

Until PANTONE's announcement of last year's color of the year for 2010 — 15-5519 Turquoise — I had no idea how powerful this declaration would really be. Every magazine, blog and website was littered with turquoise, blue-green, teal and any shade bearing the slightest resemblance to turquoise.

PANTONE continues its fashion and home decor domination by declaring 2011′s color…

wait for it…

PANTONEs 2011 Color of the Year

Honeysuckle.

Energizing Honeysuckle lifts spirits and imparts confidence to meet life's ongoing challenges.

A Color for All Seasons. Courageous. Confident. Vital. A brave new color, for a brave new world. Let the bold spirit of Honeysuckle infuse you, lift you and carry you through the year. It's a color for every day — with nothing "everyday" about it.

This reddish, pinkish, salmonish color will dominate the internerd for the next 12 months. Are you ready?

Within 20 minutes of this declaration on Thursday, my inbox was flooded with pink-colored gift ideas, roundups and submissions. It was like a Pepto-Bismol explosion in my inbox. That being said, I actually like this color but am afraid that PANTONE's influence may flood the market so much so that I might get sick of it very quickly.

What do you think? Love it or hate it? Care or don't care? Will you be using it in any of your projects?

Lotus Fresh Supermarket in Shanghai by HEAD Architecture and Design

Yes, I said supermarket.

Lotus Fresh Supermarket in Shanghai by HEAD Architecture and Design

HEAD Architecture and Design stepped up to the challenge to create what might be the loveliest supermarket I've ever seen.

From the architects:

Lotus is a well established brand in China with 70 supermarkets across the country. In an effort to appeal to discerning shoppers in the Pudong area and to compete with the many new luxury food brands moving in to the Shanghai, Lotus commissioned HEAD to develop a new flagship store transitioning from 100% local brands, toward a larger component of foreign products and services.

The store has been re-planned around two main areas. Firstly a fresh section, followed by the dry area which encompasses non-food, beauty and preserved items. Many demonstration areas feature tables and customisable columns.

New chilled display counters are combined with back wall super graphics and timber canopies. New low-level shelving and counters across the fresh area create clear vistas to the back wall making the store feel larger and more open. The open market appearance is further enhanced by open ceilings and a set of store graphics that incorporate clear hand scripted fonts in Chinese and English. New staff uniforms and training were a key component in the successful relaunch of the store in January 2010.

Dropping Anchor by Scabetti

Dropping Anchor is a sculpture created by Scabetti (Dominic and Frances Bromley) that lives in the entrance to the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO's) Headquarters in central London.

Depicting the landmasses and oceans of the world, this lighted installation is about 16′ 5″ tall and 6′ 7″ wide. Made out of 3,424 pieces of anchor-shaped fine bone china, it represents the shipping industry's reach across land and water. The purity of the bone china also reflects the IMO's international remit and mission statement: "Safe, Secure and Efficient Shipping on Clean Oceans."
