Maker Faire Africa, a celebration of African ingenuity, innovation and invention has just broken ground to bring young inventors’ creative talents and business insight. The educational and inspiring 2-day event is on at the Chancellor’s Court of the University of Nairobi, Kenya and you have makers hailing from Uganda, Rwanda, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria and South Africa. Amongst the incredible ideas being exhibited here, the “Digital Drum” truly stands out.
Built by 3 engineers/IT experts from Kampala, Uganda, this rugged computer kiosk is made from an old oil drum. Taking help from a team of car mechanics, the first prototype of the kiosk was developed over a period of 3 days in February 2010. The 3 engineers are pleased that UNICEF, the government of Uganda, and NGO and private sector partners are preparing to roll out the first working models in the 2nd half of 2010. They will be installed at schools, youth centers, and other community access points were it will offer information regarding government services, development projects across the nation, health care and education.
